The Moon governs the mind (manas), emotions, memory and intuition. It signifies the mother, comfort, the public, water and the rhythm of daily life. A well-placed Moon brings emotional balance, popularity and a nurturing nature.
The Warrior · Commander
Mars is energy, courage, drive and discipline. It rules siblings (especially younger), land and property, sports, surgery and the fighting spirit. A strong Mars gives stamina, leadership in action and the will to overcome obstacles.
The Prince · Messenger
Mercury rules intellect, communication, logic and speech. It governs business, writing, mathematics, trade and adaptability. A strong Mercury gives sharp wit, eloquence, analytical skill and success in commerce and learning.
The Guru · Great Benefic
Jupiter is wisdom, knowledge, dharma and expansion — the greatest benefic. It rules teachers, children, wealth, faith, higher learning and good fortune. A strong Jupiter brings optimism, generosity, blessings and spiritual growth.
The Minister · Lesser Benefic
Venus rules love, beauty, relationships and luxury. It signifies marriage, the spouse, arts, music, comfort, vehicles and refinement. A strong Venus gives charm, artistic talent, a happy marriage and a taste for the finer things.
The Judge · Lord of Karma
Saturn is discipline, karma, patience and longevity. It rules hard work, justice, old age, service, delays and lessons. Strict but fair, a well-placed Saturn rewards effort with lasting success, maturity and authority over time.
The Shadow · Amplifier of desire
Rahu is the north lunar node — a shadow planet of ambition, obsession, foreign things, technology and sudden gains. It magnifies whatever it touches. Worldly and unconventional, Rahu pushes you toward the new, the foreign and the taboo.
The Shadow · Liberator
Ketu is the south lunar node — a shadow planet of spirituality, detachment, intuition and past-life karma. It signifies moksha (liberation), mysticism and sudden losses that lead to inner growth. Ketu detaches you from what it touches.
A planet's power in your chart comes from several factors working together:
The nine grahas are Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), and the two lunar nodes Rahu (north) and Ketu (south). Each governs specific areas of life and carries a strength that changes by sign and house.
Exaltation (uccha) is the sign where a planet is strongest and gives its best results; debilitation (neecha) is the opposite sign where it is weakest. For example, the Sun is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra. Each planet also has an exact degree of deepest exaltation.
Planets have natural friendships and enmities. A planet placed in a friend's sign behaves comfortably; in an enemy's sign it struggles. For instance, Saturn is friendly with Mercury and Venus but inimical to the Sun, Moon and Mars.

Rahu and Ketu are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic — the lunar nodes. They are "shadow planets" with no physical body. Rahu represents worldly desire and amplification; Ketu represents detachment and spirituality. Their exaltation signs are debated between classical schools.
