How is a planet's strength measured?

A planet's power in your chart comes from several factors working together:

  • Dignity — is it exalted, in its own sign, in a friend's sign, or debilitated?
  • House placement — angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10) give the most strength.
  • Shadbala — the classical six-fold strength score. Our free birth-chart calculator shows each planet's Shadbala out of 100, ranked strongest first.
  • Ashtakavarga — benefic points per house that reveal which areas of life are best supported.

Frequently asked questions

What are the 9 planets in Vedic astrology?

The nine grahas are Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), and the two lunar nodes Rahu (north) and Ketu (south). Each governs specific areas of life and carries a strength that changes by sign and house.

What is exaltation and debilitation?

Exaltation (uccha) is the sign where a planet is strongest and gives its best results; debilitation (neecha) is the opposite sign where it is weakest. For example, the Sun is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra. Each planet also has an exact degree of deepest exaltation.

What are friendly and enemy signs?

Planets have natural friendships and enmities. A planet placed in a friend's sign behaves comfortably; in an enemy's sign it struggles. For instance, Saturn is friendly with Mercury and Venus but inimical to the Sun, Moon and Mars.

Which is the strongest planet in a birth chart?

There is no single strongest planet for everyone — it depends on each chart. Strength is measured by dignity (exaltation/own sign), house placement, and Shadbala. Our free astrology chart calculates each planet's Shadbala strength out of 100 for your exact birth details.

What are Rahu and Ketu?

Rahu and Ketu are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic — the lunar nodes. They are "shadow planets" with no physical body. Rahu represents worldly desire and amplification; Ketu represents detachment and spirituality. Their exaltation signs are debated between classical schools.
