What is the Chinese Gender Calendar?
The Chinese Gender Calendar — also called the Chinese baby calendar, Chinese gender chart, or Chinese birth chart — is a traditional method said to predict whether you're having a boy or a girl. According to legend, the original chart was discovered in a royal tomb near Beijing over 700 years ago and was once used by the imperial family. It uses just two pieces of information: the mother's age and the month of conception, both measured on the Chinese lunar calendar.
Today it's one of the most popular baby-gender traditions in the world. Parents-to-be use it for fun long before an ultrasound can reveal the gender, and many enjoy comparing the prediction with the real result after the baby arrives. Our calculator does the lunar-calendar maths for you, so you don't need to convert anything by hand.
How the Chinese Gender Predictor works
The predictor cross-references two numbers on a fixed 28-row chart. Here's exactly what happens when you click "Predict baby gender":
- We work out the mother's Chinese lunar age. In Chinese tradition a baby is already 1 year old at birth and gains a year at each lunar new year, so the Chinese age runs roughly one year ahead of the normal (Gregorian) age. We convert it automatically from her date of birth.
- We take the month of conception (not the due date) for the year you choose — 2025, 2026, or 2027.
- We look up the chart. Where the mother's lunar-age row meets the conception-month column, the traditional chart shows either Boy or Girl.
- We also show every month of the year so you can see, at a glance, which months the chart predicts a boy and which predict a girl in 2026.
How accurate is the Chinese Gender Calendar in 2026?
Honestly? It's a coin flip. There is no scientific evidence that the chart predicts gender — a baby's sex is determined biologically by chromosomes at the moment of conception, and that's a roughly 50/50 chance. Any "accuracy" you read about online is anecdotal. People remember the times it was right and forget the times it wasn't.
The only reliable ways to know your baby's gender are a medical ultrasound (usually around 18–20 weeks), NIPT blood testing (from about 10 weeks), or amniocentesis. Treat the Chinese Gender Calendar as a fun tradition to share with family — not as medical guidance.
Tips for using the chart in 2026
- Use the month you conceived, not the month the baby is due.
- If you're planning a 2026 pregnancy, use the month-by-month table to spot the traditional "boy months" and "girl months" for your age.
- Already pregnant? Enter the conception month and compare the prediction with your ultrasound later — it's a fun keepsake.
- The chart only covers a mother's lunar age of 18 to 45; outside that range there's no traditional prediction.
Chinese Gender Calendar 2026 — FAQ
How does the Chinese Gender Calendar 2026 work?
It uses two numbers: the mother's Chinese lunar age at the time of conception and the lunar month she conceived. Cross-referencing them on a centuries-old chart gives a boy or girl prediction. It is a traditional folk method, meant for fun, not medical accuracy.
Is the Chinese gender predictor accurate?
There is no scientific evidence that it works — gender is determined biologically at conception, which is roughly a 50/50 chance. Many parents enjoy it as a fun tradition. The only accurate methods are an ultrasound (around 18–20 weeks), NIPT blood testing, or genetic testing.
What is Chinese lunar age?
In Chinese tradition a baby is considered 1 year old at birth and gains a year at each lunar new year, so Chinese age runs roughly one year ahead of your normal (Gregorian) age. Our calculator converts it for you automatically.
Should I use the conception month or the due date?
Always use the month of conception, not the due date. If you are unsure, conception is usually about two weeks after the first day of your last period, or roughly 38 weeks before the due date.
Can I predict my baby's gender for every month of 2026?
Yes. Enter the mother's date of birth and the calculator shows a boy/girl prediction for conceiving in each month of 2026, so you can see the traditional "lucky" months at a glance.
