How name numerology works

In Pythagorean name numerology, each letter maps to a number 1–9:

9 = I, R (not shown above for space)

The three name numbers explained

Expression Number (Destiny Number)

Uses ALL letters of your full birth name. It represents your overall destiny — what you're here to do, the abilities you came with, and the direction your life is pulling you toward. This is your most important name number.

Soul Urge Number (Heart's Desire)

Uses only the VOWELS (A, E, I, O, U). It reveals your deepest desires, inner motivations, and what makes you feel truly fulfilled. Often the "private self" that only close people see.

Personality Number

Uses only the CONSONANTS. It reflects the first impression you make — the face you show the world before people really know you. Your external persona.

Lucky name numerology

Traditional Indian name numerology compares your name number with your Driver number (birth day reduced to a single digit). Names that produce numbers compatible with your Driver are considered "lucky."

DriverCompatible name numbersAvoid
1 (Sun)1, 3, 96, 8
2 (Moon)2, 79
3 (Jupiter)1, 3, 96
4 (Uranus)1, 4, 83
5 (Mercury)1, 5, 6
6 (Venus)3, 5, 61
7 (Neptune)2, 74
8 (Saturn)4, 81
9 (Mars)1, 3, 92

Compatibility tables are traditional guidelines — not rigid rules. Trust your own experience alongside the numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Which name should I use — nickname or birth name?

Always use your full name as it appears on your birth certificate. Nicknames and married names carry their own energy but the birth name is the primary numerological signature.

Does changing my name change my numerology?

It changes your Expression number going forward. Many numerologists believe a name change adds a new layer of energy but doesn't erase the original. Both the birth name and the current name can be read.

What is the difference between Pythagorean and Chaldean name numerology?

Pythagorean assigns A=1 through Z=26 in sequence (reduced). Chaldean uses a different assignment (1–8 only, with 9 considered sacred). Most Western name numerology uses Pythagorean. Our calculator uses Pythagorean.

Can I calculate name numerology for a baby?

Yes — many parents use name numerology to choose a baby name that harmonizes with the child's birth date numbers. Enter the candidate name and see which numbers it produces.
