Lo Shu Grid guide

How to read your
Lo Shu Grid

A complete step-by-step guide — from placing your birthday digits on the grid to interpreting missing numbers, repeating numbers, arrows of strength, and your core numerology numbers.

What is the Lo Shu Grid?

The Lo Shu Grid — also called the Lo Shu Square, Magic Square of Three, or Lo Shu Numerology Grid — is an ancient Chinese numerical diagram dating back over 4,000 years. According to legend, Emperor Yu saw a sacred turtle emerge from the Lo River. On its shell was a 3×3 pattern where every row, column, and diagonal summed to exactly 15.

In modern numerology, each cell of the 3×3 grid is assigned a number from 1 to 9. Your date of birth is the key: every digit in your full birthdate (ignoring zeros) lands on its corresponding position in the grid. The resulting pattern — which cells are filled, which are empty, which have multiple numbers — forms a unique map of your personality, strengths, blind spots, and life tendencies.

Unlike Western numerology which focuses primarily on a single Life Path number, the Lo Shu Grid gives you a visual, multi-dimensional reading that captures nuance and complexity. Two people can share a Life Path number but have completely different grids — and therefore, completely different expressions of that energy.

Quick fact: The grid's magic constant of 15 is significant — 15 is the number of days in each of the 24 cycles of the Chinese solar year. The turtle's shell pattern was seen as a map of universal order.

Step 1 — Write out your full date of birth

You need your complete date of birth in DD/MM/YYYY format. Every single digit matters — day, month, and all four digits of the year.

For example, if you were born on 5 November 1988, write it as:

0 5 / 1 1 / 1 9 8 8

Now list every individual digit: 0, 5, 1, 1, 1, 9, 8, 8.

Next, remove all zeros. Zero has no position in the Lo Shu Grid — it represents absence, not energy. So our working list becomes: 5, 1, 1, 1, 9, 8, 8.

Important: Always use the actual birth date — not a changed or legal name date. The Lo Shu Grid works with the moment of birth. Zeros are always excluded from placement.

Step 2 — Place the digits on the 3×3 grid

The Lo Shu Grid has a fixed layout. Unlike what you might expect, the numbers do not run 1–2–3 left to right, top to bottom. The traditional arrangement is:

4
9
2
3
5
7
8
1
6

Each cell represents a number and holds the instances of that number from your birthdate. So for our example (digits: 5, 1, 1, 1, 9, 8, 8):

  • Cell 1 gets: 1, 1, 1 (three instances)
  • Cell 5 gets: 5 (one instance)
  • Cell 8 gets: 8, 8 (two instances)
  • Cell 9 gets: 9 (one instance)
  • Cells 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 are empty (missing)

The more times a number appears, the more dominant that energy is in your personality. Three 1s — as in this example — means the qualities of position 1 are extremely pronounced.

Step 3 — Read the meaning of each position

Each of the nine positions carries specific energies. A filled position means that energy is naturally available to you. Here are all nine positions and what they represent:

1

Career & Drive

Water element

Ambition, leadership, independence, self-reliance. Your professional drive and how you assert yourself in the world.

2

Sensitivity

Earth element

Intuition, empathy, partnership, emotional intelligence. How you connect with others at a feeling level.

3

Expression

Wood element

Communication, creativity, social skills, humour. Your natural ability to express yourself and connect.

4

Patience & Planning

Wood element

Organisation, detail, patience, persistence. Your capacity to plan and see long-term projects through.

5

Balance & Freedom

Earth element

Change, adaptability, freedom, central balance. The hub that connects all other energies in your grid.

6

Nurturing

Metal element

Responsibility, home, family, creativity in the material world. How you care for and create for others.

7

Reflection

Metal element

Sacrifice, learning through experience, introspection, spiritual growth. How you find meaning through hardship.

8

Practicality

Earth element

Material achievement, business sense, physical world, endurance. Your relationship with money and the tangible.

9

Intellect

Fire element

Vision, mental clarity, leadership, idealism. Your ability to see the big picture and inspire others.

Position 5 (Balance) is the most important cell — it is the centre of the grid. People with 5 in their grid tend to be naturally adaptable and comfortable with change. Those missing 5 often find transitions and uncertainty particularly challenging.

Step 4 — Identify your missing numbers

A missing number is any digit from 1–9 that does not appear anywhere in your date of birth. In numerology, missing numbers are not "bad" — they are invitations to develop. They represent areas where growth is possible, and often where some of life's most meaningful work happens.

Missing 1 — Career & Identity

May struggle with self-confidence, direction, or taking initiative. Learning to assert yourself is a key life theme.

Missing 2 — Sensitivity & Relationships

Can appear emotionally unavailable or insensitive. Developing empathy and listening skills brings great reward.

Missing 3 — Expression & Creativity

May find communication or creative expression difficult. Often the person who knows what they want to say but can't find the words.

Missing 4 — Patience & Planning

Tends to rush or skip steps. Organisation feels like effort. Building habits and systems becomes a key developmental task.

Missing 5 — Balance & Adaptability

Change and uncertainty feel threatening. Flexibility and going with the flow is something to consciously cultivate.

Missing 6 — Nurturing & Responsibility

May resist domestic responsibility or find it hard to put others first. Learning to care without losing self is the theme.

Missing 7 — Introspection & Learning

Avoids stillness, reflection, or deep study. The inner life may feel unfamiliar. Meditation and journalling are powerful tools.

Missing 8 — Practicality & Material World

Finances, systems, and physical reality may feel overwhelming. Developing practical discipline unlocks great potential.

Missing 9 — Intellect & Vision

Big-picture thinking and idealism may not come naturally. Ambition and leadership potential are areas to consciously grow.

Very few people are missing more than 3–4 numbers. If you are missing 5 or more, your grid is unusually sparse — which often correlates with an intense, focused personality with very deliberate strengths.

Step 5 — Spot repeating numbers

When a digit appears more than once in your date of birth, it lands on its grid position multiple times. Repetition amplifies energy:

CountLabelWhat it means
×1PresentEnergy is available and functional
×2AmplifiedThat trait is noticeably strong — a natural talent
×3DominantThe energy defines you — it's unmissable to others
×4+OverloadThe strength can become a weakness if not balanced

For example, three 1s in the grid (position 1 = Career/Drive) produces someone of intense ambition and self-reliance — but at overload, can tip into self-absorption or an inability to collaborate. Virat Kohli has three 1s in his grid. The pattern fits.

Step 6 — Find your arrows of strength and weakness

The most powerful patterns in a Lo Shu Grid are arrows — when three positions in a straight line (row, column, or diagonal) are all filled or all empty.

Arrows of Strength (all three filled):

Planner (4–5–6)Exceptional organisational ability. Thrives with systems, schedules, and long-term strategy.
Will (1–5–9)Unstoppable determination. Sets goals and pursues them relentlessly regardless of obstacles.
Compassion (2–5–8)Deep empathy combined with practical helpfulness. Natural counsellor or community builder.
Intellect (3–5–7)Sharp analytical mind. Excellent at research, debate, writing, and problem-solving.
Practicality (1–2–3)Grounded, hands-on, gets things done. Excellent at translating ideas into real results.
Prosperity (4–8–3 or 7–8–9)Strong orientation toward material achievement and accumulation.

Arrows of Weakness (all three missing):

Frustration (1–2–3 missing)Difficulty turning plans into action. Tends to over-think and under-execute.
Sensitivity (2–5–8 missing)Can appear emotionally detached. Empathy and emotional connection require conscious effort.
Scepticism (3–5–7 missing)Struggles to trust intuition. May over-rely on logic and dismiss feelings.

Most people have zero to two arrows total. Having three or more arrows of strength is extremely rare and indicates an unusually powerful and focused personality.

Step 7 — Calculate your Driver and Life Path numbers

Beyond the grid itself, two key numbers summarise your numerology profile:

Driver Number

Your birth day reduced to a single digit. It represents your primary personality — how you naturally operate day to day.

Born on 5th → Driver = 5
Born on 29th → 2+9 = 11 → 1+1 = 2

Life Path (Conductor)

Your full date of birth reduced to a single digit. It represents your life's overall journey and how the world perceives you.

05/11/1988 → 0+5+1+1+1+9+8+8 = 33 → 3+3 = 6

Think of the Driver as your engine and the Life Path as your road. Your grid shows all the terrain in between. Together they give a complete picture: who you are, how you move, and where you're headed.

Full worked example — Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli was born on 5 November 1988 (05/11/1988).

Step 1 — Digits: 0, 5, 1, 1, 1, 9, 8, 8 → remove zeros → 5, 1, 1, 1, 9, 8, 8

Step 2 — Grid placement:

4

9

9

2

3

5

5

7

8

8 8

1

1 1 1

6

Step 3 — Filled positions: 1 (×3), 5 (×1), 8 (×2), 9 (×1)

Step 4 — Missing numbers: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 — sensitivity, expression, patience, nurturing, and introspection are all areas of development

Step 5 — Repeats: Triple 1 (dominant ambition), double 8 (amplified practicality)

Step 6 — Arrows: No complete arrows of strength or weakness

Step 7 — Driver: Day 5 → Driver 5 (freedom, adaptability, change). Life Path: 5+1+1+1+9+8+8 = 33 → 3+3 = 6 (responsibility, nurturing — note the contrast with missing 6 in the grid)

Reading: Kohli's grid shows a person of fierce drive and ambition (triple 1), material discipline (double 8), and intellectual vision (9). The missing sensitivity numbers (2, 3, 6, 7) align with the public narrative of someone intensely focused, occasionally perceived as abrasive, and learning to develop patience and emotional range — exactly the arc of his public career. His Life Path 6 (responsibility to others) creates an interesting tension with his Driver 5 (personal freedom), playing out in the balance between team obligation and individual expression.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read my Lo Shu Grid?

Place each digit of your date of birth (excluding zeros) onto its matching cell in the 3×3 grid. Read filled cells as active energies, empty cells as areas to develop, and repeated numbers as amplified traits. Three filled positions in a line form an Arrow of Strength.

Is the Lo Shu Grid the same as the Magic Square?

Yes. The Lo Shu Grid is the oldest known magic square — a 3×3 arrangement where every row, column, and diagonal sums to 15. In numerology, the same grid is used to map personality from a date of birth.

Can two people have the same Lo Shu Grid?

Yes — anyone born on the same date will have the same grid. This is why the celebrity twin feature is interesting: it shows you who shares your exact pattern, and what they did with it.

What if I have too many missing numbers?

Many people miss 4 or 5 numbers, especially those born before 2000 (since years like 1975 only contribute digits 1, 9, 7, 5). Missing numbers simply show where effort and growth are needed — they are not deficiencies.

Does Lo Shu Grid work for everyone?

The Lo Shu Grid system works with any date of birth regardless of nationality, culture, or religion. It is a mathematical mapping of your birthday, not a belief system. You decide what meaning to draw from it.
